Cushions between the vertebrae that absorb shock. A "slipped disc" is when the soft centre pushes out and presses on a nerve.
Inward at the neck and lower back, outward at the mid-back and sacrum. Too much curve is kyphosis; a sideways curve is scoliosis.
Leave the spine between the vertebrae. Pressure on one causes pain along its path — sciatica in the leg, or arm pain from the neck.
